Reason No 13 / Sebab No 13

Twenty two million people (almost the total population of Malaysia) can't be wrong. Well, that's the total number of tourists who visited Malaysia in 2008. In 2001, 12.7 million tourists came to our shores. That almost double of the total number of tourists who visited Indonesia in 2008, which was 6.4 million. In 2001, Indonesia had 5.2 million visitors.

If Malaysia is such a bad place, surely none of the 2.4 million Indonesians would've have come to Malaysia in 2008. Or may be some of them came to Malaysia but never returned to Indonesia (if you know what I mean). By the way, 864 thousand Malaysians visited Indonesia in 2008, and I bet you my last Rupiah that everyone of them came back home.

It took Indonesian authorities forever (well, actually about nine years) to catch Noordin Mat Top for wrecking terror and havoc in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Malaysian authorities caught Mas Selamat Kastari in about a year. Noordin Mat Top was killed in an ambush, while Mas Selamat was alive, but apparently not kicking, when he was brought in by the Malaysian authorities.

What took the Indonesians too long? If they had caught Nordin earlier, they could have saved a lot of lives. And why do people follow the likes of Noordin and Mas Selamat in planning and carrying out bombings against their own people? How stupid can a person be to become a human bomb? Condolences to all those who lost their lives and their families due to their actions.

2 million people can't be wrong because that's the number of Indonesians who are making a living in Malaysia. I don't know and don't care how many Malaysians are in Indonesia. It's probably an insignificant number. All I know is if Malaysia is not better than Indonesia, then there won't be that many Indonesians in Malaysia.

The sad thing is, however, a lot of these Indonesians, about 800,000 of the 2 million, are in Malaysia illegally. Some have even lost their lives trying to enter or leave Malaysia. Why is this so? Why risk their lives? Is the value of life so cheap to them?

Anyway, to lighten up a bit, here's a joke for you readers.
Q: How many Malaysians does it take to change the light bulb?
A: None, Malaysians have Indonesians to do it for them.

PETRONAS and PERTAMINA. When PETRONAS came into being in the mid 1970’s, PERTAMINA became the example of what a national oil company should become. Oil and gas contracts signed in Malaysia were based on those signed in Indonesia. Since then, while Indonesia is now a net importer of oil and is out of OPEC and PERTAMINA is nowhere to be seen in the world of oil and gas except maybe in their own home ground and a few places here and there, Malaysia continues to be a net exporter of oil and PETRONAS is now at No 80 in the Fortune Global 500 and explores and produces oil and gas all around the globe.

By the way, I found a few websites comparing PETRONAS and PERTAMINA, which are usually written by Indonesians. Here are a couple of them:

It's safer to take a flight in Malaysia compared to Indonesia. According to Aviation Safety Network and Flight Safety Organisation, since 1943, only 32 fatal accidents happened in Malaysia, involving 285 casualties. On the other hand, 102 fatal accidents involving 2,195 casualties occured in Indonesia.

In the past five years, three major accidents happened in Indonesia involving its own Air Force - 99 casualties (May 2009), Adamair - 102 casualties (January 2007) and Mandala Airlines - 199 casualties (September 2005). So much so that a number of Indonesia airlines are banned by the European Union. These include AdamAir, Mandala Airlines, Merpati Nusantara, Lion Airlines, Sriwijaya Air and Manunggal Air.

Ot the other hand, the last major accident in Malaysia happened in September 1995, involving a Malaysian Airlines Fokker 50 aircraft in Tawau with 34 casualties. No Malaysian airlines have been banned by the European Union.

My sincere condelences to the families of the casualties.

Malaysia is more competitive compared to Indonesia. Based on Global Competitiveness Report 2009-2010 by World Economic Forum, Malaysia is at a higher rank or more competitive than Indonesia. In the report, Malaysia is at number 24, while Indonesia is at number 254. Just kidding, Indonesia is at number 54.

Malaysia is more developed than Indonesia. By looking at GDP per capita alone, we know that. Based on information from the Australian Departement of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Malaysia GDP per capita in 2008 is US$8,141, while Indonesia's only US$2,246. In terms of total GDP, Indonesia has a bigger total GDP of US$511.8 billion to Malaysia's US$222.2 billion. But bear in mind Malaysia's population is only 27.3 million compared to Indonesia's 227.8 million. Arithematically, with that kind of population, Indonesia should produce at least 7 or 8 times more GDP than Malaysia.

Malaysia lebih maju dari Indonesia. Dengan hanya melihat KDNK per kapita, kita tahu. Berdasarkan maklumat daripada Jabatan Perhubungan Luar dan Perdagangan Australia, KDNK per kapita Malaysia adalah US$8,141, sementara Indonesia hanya US$2,246. Dari segi jumlah KDNK, Indonesia memang mempunyai jumlah KDNK yang besar iaitu US$511.8 bilion berbanding Malaysia US$222.2 billion.
